Recovery And After Care

Recovery, Aftercare and Complications

When considering a cosmetic surgery abroad, planning recovery and aftercare, along with the possibility of complications is an imperative part of the planning. A good surgeon helps you aware about what to expect and help in planning aftercare. After all, proper aftercare is vital for the success of your procedure.

Recovery and Aftercare

Aftercare requirements and recovery is specific to the surgical procedure and surgeon's recommendations. To avoid complications and have the best possible outcome, ask your surgeon:

What is the post op care his facility offers?

First 24 hours are very critical as typically this is the period when complications are likely to arise due to the anesthesia or excessive bleeding. If it is an outpatient procedure, find out how he will help you or if you can return to his clinic in case of a complication.

What kind of post-op care will be required?

Since you have to arrange assistance before hand, ask your surgeon what type of care will be required post surgery. You may be groggy and require a ride and someone to stay with you for a night. Alternatively, you may need help in getting dressed and caring for other personal needs for a few days. Once you know, you can make due arrangements to avoid hassle later.

How long after the surgery before you travel again? How will travel affect the surgical outcome?

Long hours of sitting or staying in the same position during the travel after the surgery may cause pain and complication and mar the results, so find out how long you need to wait before traveling home. Follow your surgeon's advice closely.

What are the restrictions and precaution you need to take after the surgery?

Vigorous vacation activities such as swimming, sun-bathing, smoking or drinking alcohol are to be avoided after the surgery. Ask your doctor what else you should avoid. He may ask you to refrain from lifting heavy bags, standing or walking for long periods of time and suggest bed rest.

Chances of complications after any invasive surgery cannot be ruled out therefore it is important to prepare a plan for post-op care ahead of time. Make sure you ask and clear the following matters with your surgeon before surgery.

Where do you go in case of an emergency after the surgery?

Will he be available to respond to your call if you have concerns after surgery?

Is he affiliated with any clinics in your home country where you can go to for follow-up care?
